Beyond the standard
What are EMDR intensives?
For a description of EMDR in general, see the EMDR page.
EMDR intensives are an accelerated approach to EMDR that takes away the interruptions of weekly therapy. Those interruptions include things like:
Vacations, illnesses, or emergencies making you miss sessions
Needing to discuss things that just happened instead of working on past events
Spending time at the beginning of the session preparing to do EMDR
Spending time at the end of the session wrapping up and getting ready to return to your day
These things slow down your progress. They reduce how often you meet with your therapist, or how much time in each session you can spend working on your concern.
The EMDR intensive process prepares you for working on those painful experiences before you even begin the session. You’re able to go quickly into processing the trauma, and flow from memory to memory. Your brain stays activated and focused on the things that happened, so it can continuously do the healing work without interruption. This saves you time, money, and pain.
The EMDR Intensive Process
You have your first session to talk about what you hope to get out of the intensive, necessary parts of your history, and learn skills that will be helpful for your daily life and trauma treatment. This is a 90 minute session.
After that first meeting, you will receive a customized workbook. This has things to do more to prepare you for the trauma work, as well as things to return to your therapist for them to thoroughly plan your trauma processing session.
One to two weeks after that first meeting, we will meet for the trauma processing session. This session may be three hours or six hours, depending on what we decide is best.
Towards the end of your processing session, we will review your progress to decide on next steps. Some people completely resolve their concerns in one session. Some people want multiple intensive sessions, or to continue after that with weekly therapy. There are a number of factors that influence this, such as the amount of traumas experienced.
A week after your final processing session, you will have an hour-long check in session with me. This is to confirm that you achieved what you wanted to achieve, and build further positive things that you can take with you moving forward.
Healing doesn’t have to take a long time.
You have the power to…
Save time and money by condensing your therapy

-
Yes! As long as you have a good internet connection and a private place to meet, EMDR intensives are just as effective online as in person.
-
Absolutely. People who have already been in therapy often see faster results. You don’t have to have ever been to therapy to participate in and benefit from an EMDR intensive, however.
